I’m a big fan of Medium, a platform for writers to share their ideas, stories and prose. I have been a paying member since 2019.
I wanted to share 2 things about this platform that I am super excited about.
In this day where we are dreading when we won’t be able to distinguish a machine’s work from a man’s work, I hold on to platforms like Medium that prioritize human created work.
Medium recently revealed their updated publishing guidelines that filled me with relief and optimism.
The gist of them is this:
“While we understand that AI technology can assist writing in many ways, stories that are generated entirely by AI don’t fit with Medium’s mission of being a place for high-quality human stories that deepen people’s understanding of the world.
At its worst, AI-generated text is filled with hallucinations, which is the word the AI industry is using to describe egregious mistakes. But even at its best, AI-generated text is bland, lacking in human wisdom, and filled with subtle deficiencies.”
I’m all for embracing new technology, as the fact is we can escape it but to our own detriment. I truly believe that in the communications and content industry, those who are able to use AI tools to work better and faster will be those who continue to thrive. Call it my Darwinian logic.
However, we also need to recognize its limitations and ensure we use it only to assist us. We need to reject mediocre work so that we do not reduce the standards of creativity, expression and story-telling that we are used to.
Medium has decided to allow the responsible use of AI-assistive technology, rather than welcome it. A small yet important distinction that having seen the capabilities of AI tools (or lack of), I understand and respect.
